In fact, how often you deploy your pop-ups is something you need to think about carefully. You want to avoid frustrating them with intrusive or constant pop-ups. The most important point is to always consider the end user’s convenience. Pop-ups can even be made dynamic, appearing depending on the visitor’s geographic location or what website they arrived from. You can also set pop-ups to appear after the user has spent a certain amount of time on a page, or when they have scrolled down to a specific point. You can use these pop-ups to offer a limited time deal, a coupon code, or even a free gift: This triggers a custom message, encouraging the visitor to stick around. This is a pop-up that appears when the user’s mouse cursor moves towards the top of the browser, indicating that they are about to leave the page. One popular usage is the exit intent pop-up. In fact, you can tailor when a pop-up is deployed in several ways. You see, pop-ups don’t have to appear as soon as somebody accesses your site. How to Create Effective, Non-Frustrating Pop-UpsĪs we’ve made clear, the key to a successful pop-up is knowing how and when to use it. They can also be deployed with more finesse than their older counterparts, rather than simply appearing as soon as your site loads. For instance, they can offer the user a free gift, like an ebook download, or ask them to sign up to your newsletter. What’s more, you can use pop-ups in several different ways. A pop-up’s purpose should be to make the benefits of whatever you’re offering to the user clear, rather than annoying them into clicking through. The key to positive results is using your pop-ups intelligently, and constructing them with the end user in mind. So, how is this possible? As we alluded to earlier, it’s all about how you use the tools you have. In fact, when used correctly, pop-ups can increase conversions and email opt-ins significantly, and they have a higher Click-Through Rate (CTR) than other types of ads. Pop-ups never really lost that negative initial perception, so it may surprise you that they are actually a very effective marketing tool. Why You Should Use Pop-Ups on Your Website This means pop-ups can be a valuable tool if you use them properly. Website owners have also adapted some best practices for using pop-ups that help them avoid frustrating their users. This is far less disruptive, and it’s easy to dismiss the box with a single click. Instead, they usually manifest as a smaller box laid out on top of the current page. For example, pop-ups very rarely actually ‘pop up’ anymore. In fact, when we talk about pop-ups today, we’re talking about a different beast altogether. Many even used intrusive techniques like auto-opening when you closed them, or included malware that could harm your computer.įortunately, those types of pop-ups have long since become a bad memory. Pop-up ads became so commonplace that they made browsing the web frustrating. Even though his solution was clever, many used it in ways that were considerably more disruptive and malicious. Zuckerman would later apologize for this innovation. In response, a developer named Ethan Zuckerman came up with the idea to have the ad appear in a pop-up window, so it would not appear alongside the actual website content. However, one of the banners had appeared on a site the advertisers were not happy to be directly associated with. The ad was for a business that provided services for recent college graduates. The first pop-up advertisement appeared in the late 1990’s. Let’s take a look! A Brief History of Pop-Ups We’ll also explore some best practices for implementing them, and show you how to add them to your WordPress site. In this article, we’ll discuss how pop-ups of today differ from their older counterparts. In fact, implementing them well on your site can lead to a massive increase in conversions. While they can still be used poorly, for the most part they have evolved into something that can be hugely beneficial to both website owners and visitors. However, times have changed – and the same is true for pop-ups. Usually these were just annoying, but the worst examples could even contain harmful malware. It wasn’t uncommon to visit an innocuous site, only to be bombarded with dozens of unrelated pop-ups. WordPress Pop-ups have a bad reputation, and if you were an active internet user over a decade ago, you probably understand why. The Amazon Kindle Oasis, the latest Kindle Paperwhite, and the Kobo Forma, Libra 2, and Sage are all rated to withstand submersion in water to some degree. If you like to read in the bath, by the pool, or on the beach, you might want to consider buying a waterproof ebook reader. Unfortunately, we can't recommend them yet the screen technology is relatively dim, with low full-color resolution and occasional ghosting. We've tested two of them, the Onyx Boox Nova3 Color and the PocketBook InkPad Color, that show some of the exciting possibilities of color E Ink. In 2020, we saw a breakthrough in color E Ink displays, with several readers appearing based on the E Ink Kaleido or E Ink Kaleido Plus technologies. Because of its high-quality screen and general power, though, we recommend the base-model iPad for most people trying to read rich, full-page color content. Even lower-cost tablets like the Amazon Fire 7 can browse the web, stream video from Netflix, Hulu, or other sources, play music, and run apps. Magazines and comic books look great on larger tablets. If you need to read more than books, tablets with color screens offer a bevy of other benefits. Frequent, startling screen flashes are really a thing of the past the screens flash much more subtly, much more quickly, and much less frequently. If you haven't updated your ebook reader in many years, you'll be stunned at how much more responsive the latest E Ink readers are. The new Carta 1200 technology, used in Amazon's latest Paperwhite and Kobo's Elipsa, Libra 2, and Sage, has noticeably faster page turns and a bit better contrast than even the previous 300ppi Carta displays. E Ink also keeps improving its screens' contrast and refresh rate. The lowest-priced Kindles use 167ppi displays that look rough and jaggy compared with the 300ppi displays on most other ebook readers. Screen resolutions and quality also vary. I've found that you start to have balance issues with one-handed reading when a model goes above 7 inches. The latest Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Libra 2 have 7-inch displays the Kobo Forma and Sage have 8-inch screens and Onyx sells larger-format readers up to 13.3 inches. Most E Ink readers were 6 inches for many years, but the panel sizes are slowly growing. In all cases, E Ink is much easier to read in bright sunlight, while color touch screens on tablets tend to wash out, and their glossy displays can show distracting reflections. On the lowest settings, you can read in the dark while your partner sleeps peacefully next to you. With each model, you can vary the intensity of the brightness from barely there to flashlight-bright. But most ebook readers now include edge lighting that lets you see in the dark. On the least expensive models, it's not backlit, so you'll need light to see the text, just as you would with a printed book. E Ink, or digital ink (often manufactured by the E Ink company), looks a lot like paper, and it's easy on your eyes when reading for long periods.
In conclusion, a pin is when you hold your opponent down using his own weight against him.įrom behind, the attacking wrestler leaps onto the opponent's shoulders and rolls forward. Some referees will even allow people in the crowd to get involved in the action by raising their hands in the air during an escape attempt or when being held by another person while waiting for help to arrive. This period ends when the referee signals to go to work, so be careful not to keep your opponent up too long! There is no rule that specifies how high you must lift your opponent in order to score a pin. The referee may call for a count out if it appears that either man is not finished.Ī pin can also be scored by holding your opponent up in the air for a period of time. A legal pin occurs when a wrestler's shoulders are completely under his opponent's body and he has control of both arms and legs. This can cause further injury to the pinned wrestler. An illegal pin is one where the wrestler applies excessive pressure on the injured part of the opponent's body. On the mat, there are two types of pins: legal and illegal. If done correctly, the attacker has achieved a pin. The attacker's arm elevates the opponent's shoulder as his hand pulls down on his neck at the same time, the attacker drives forward perpendicular to the opponent's body to roll him over onto his back. How does a pin work in a wrestling match?įrom the outside, the attacker's arm is pushed underneath the opponent's shoulder, across and behind the opponent's neck. This time, though, there is no revival because nothing remains of O to resurrect. Using a sledgehammer, Undertaker breaks open the casket, killing O again. After the service, The Undertaker returns to the cemetery where O's body is waiting for him. When he comes out of the coffin, it is usually at a funeral service where O is given a farewell kiss by a loved one. Then, A crosses O's legs around A's own right leg and compresses O's spine while holding his or her knees in place.Ī version of this maneuver used by The Undertaker involves O being taken out on a gurney and rolled into a casket. If B tries to stand up, A pulls B down onto his or her belly with his or her foot. A makes the sharpshooter sign with his hand and calls out "sharpshooter". For example, A and O are on the stage with A in front of O. This maneuver can also be applied to someone who is standing up. If done correctly, O will not be able to move his body during this process. A then takes O's leg that he has crossed over the other and walks over O, flipping O over into a prone posture before bending back to compress O's lower back while holding O's knees in place. If A chooses to cross O's legs around A's own right leg, A must cross O's right leg over O's left leg or the left leg over the right leg. It’s been said couples who stay together for years start to look alike. Giving animals a human quality can be very entertaining. Alternatively, dress your pet in clothes and accessories (if they let you). At first glance, you look half-human, half-animal. An easier trick is to position your pet in front of you, letting its face cover part of yours. Extra points if you can make it appear as though the animal is eating your head. You’ll get a burst of photos to help guarantee the funniest shot. Then, quickly throw yourself into the frame and hold down the camera button. Try to catch them eating, yawning, or growling. Whether wild or domesticated, animals always liven up an Instagram feed. With that comical collection, make a photo collage on your Mac or iPhone. This can be done alone or with a group of people. Indoor photos are less grainy.īe as silly as you want. Plus, the higher pixel count makes your low-light selfie poses look crisp. More megapixels allow you to crop a photo without losing clarity. They also make a difference when sharing on social media. Megapixels matter a lot when printing photos. That’s why a photo shot with 12 megapixels has a lot more detail than one shot with only 7 megapixels. Since ‘mega’ means million, 12 megapixels is the equivalent of about 12 million pixels. All that light is what produces the detail you see in an image. It refers to the dots of light that make up a digital image. By using the rear-facing camera for selfie poses, you get almost twice the quality. The more pixels there are, the better image. Compare that to the rear-facing camera, which has 12 megapixels. With iPhone 8 and X, the front-facing camera is 7 megapixels. While it’s certainly convenient, the front-facing camera does not produce photos of the same quality. This came out with iPhone 4 and has been included in every generation since. The selfie camera is the front-facing camera on your iPhone. To pull off an expert image, avoid using the selfie camera. Even your funny selfie ideas should look high quality. Whether you’re an influencer or not, it pays to look professional. The best way to elevate your Instagram game is to treat it like a business. With the right props and poses, you’ll instantly grab attention – and tons of likes. A few funny selfie ideas can easily spice up your Instagram account. During his childhood in Louisiana, Richard says, he was “too busy running from the Klan” to play tennis, but he has decided that Venus and Serena will excel at a sport which has traditionally been as white as a Wimbledon uniform.īy night, he works as a security guard at a mall, a job which allows him to sit and study coaching manuals into the small hours. When things get back to normal, or whatever normal becomes, I hope we can all find some of that gift within ourselves. It’s a bunch of multiple Grand Slam winners and Mansour Bahrami because Mansour Bahrami has a greater gift than any of them: he can bring joy to the people who watch him. He still plays in legends tournaments with his buddies from the old days. For Mansour Bahrami, playing tennis itself is a beautiful thing. The talent was so obvious, but also the fact that for some people winning isn’t everything and it doesn’t need to be. But instead he became a different kind of star.īahrami was a journeyman who became beloved for the exuberance he showed on the court. Maybe if he had started from a younger age, and developed his talents alongside the kids he was working for as a ballboy, he would have become a superstar like his friends Yannick Noah, John McEnroe, and Bjorn Borg. It’s hard to know what would have happened had Bahrami not lost some of his career to the revolution, and to the years he spent wandering France. He bounced all over the court with a smile on his face. There was never anything boring about Bahrami the man, with his big bushy mustache and expressive eyes. There was never anything boring about his tennis. He generally couldn’t bear the thought of winning in straight sets and depriving fans of high stakes tennis, so Bahrami frequently let lesser opponents come back and make things close - only to play it too close and find himself losing the match. But he became a beloved star because of the way he played: exuberantly, outrageously, and often hilariously. Bahrami never won a men’s singles tournament on the pro tour. It was about drawing others into the sport so that they could love it as he loved it. This was the biggest victory of his career because it allowed him to have one: For Bahrami, it was never about being the greatest, but about the ability to play and perform in the sport he loved. Bahrami lost the following match, but his performance was enough to solidify his career in pro tennis, and his legal status in France. And in the first round at Roland Garros, Bahrami steamrolled an established French star named Jean-Louis Haillet. Then he proceeded to win match after match after match until, six matches later, he found himself qualified for the main draw. Instead, he fluked into the play-in bracket for the 1981 French Open. Doing so would have meant isolating himself from his family - possibly forever. He wandered the streets, slept under bridges, gave part-time tennis lessons, and refused to apply for the refugee status that would have given him permanent legal residency in France. In 20 minutes, I lost all my money."īahrami was essentially homeless. Then I thought, if I win at the casinos I can get maybe $8,000 or $9,000 and stay three, four months. “I figured I could live on that maybe 10 days or so. Then he went off to France, where he immediately blew all his savings : about $2,000, in a casino. Bahrami switched to making a living playing Backgammon. Then came the Iranian Revolution, and all of a sudden tennis - this western sport, this symbol of colonization - was banned. Things were looking up: it was already a miraculous story. By the time he turned 20, Bahrami was a professional. A few years later, he was on the Davis Cup team. Despite having no formal training, he was accepted. When he was 13, the country needed youth players to develop, and Bahrami tried out for the national program. no-sanitise-stderr don't strip control chars from standard error Manually specify a host key (may be repeated) i key private key file for user authenticationĭisconnect if SSH authentication succeeds trivially 1 -2 force use of particular SSH protocol versionįorce use of particular SSH protocol variant pwfile file login with password read from specified file load sessname Load settings from saved session pgpfp print PGP key fingerprints and exit Pscp source -ls print version information and exit This tells you the version of PSCP you're using, and gives you a brief summary of how to use PSCP: Once you've got a console window to type into, you can just type pscp on its own to bring up a usage message. Although it is evident that Deborah is frustrated in the film, the audience only receives a third-person account from Skloot’s point of view. The first-hand frustrations she feels about her lack of knowledge of her mother and the irony of those outside of the family benefiting financially off of Henrietta’s cells are clearly described. Before the first chapter, there is a small piece dedicated to Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah, in which the section gives a first-person account of her experience. Skloot maintains a greater focus on Henrietta’s family throughout the biography compared to the film. Over the course of a decade, Skloot investigated the hidden past of Henrietta Lacks and the uncovered emotional baggage of the Lacks family in order to properly convey Henrietta’s life. It was from that point that she was determined to humanize the woman behind such great accomplishments. When Skloot inquired about the type of woman Henrietta was, she was left uninformed. Rebecca Skloot experienced the startling lack of information about Henrietta firsthand during one of her biology classes. However, despite Henrietta’s significant contribution to science and medicine, little is known about her. Despite the original cells being collected over half a century ago, they maintain great relevance in the scientific community in the present. The cells were also massive contributors in recent scientific findings like the famous Human Genome Project. Some of the most important vaccination developments, such as the polio vaccine and the HPV vaccine, can be credited to HeLa cells. Several medical accomplishments and scientific discoveries resulted from this. Since the cell line had an––essentially––unlimited supply, this accelerated the amount of experiments dealing with the cells. The cells were known as “immortal”-the cancerous cells continued to divide and replicate, whereas normal cells previously collected for lab cultivation only survived a few days. HeLa cells were cervical cancer cells collected from an African-American woman named Henrietta Lacks in 1951 by Johns Hopkins Hospital. Who was Henrietta Lacks? That’s exactly the question that Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, set out to answer. The film fails to recover the life of Henrietta, and she is once again reduced to a clump of cells. This is especially useful for portraying a person’s life during a historical time period.Īlthough the film adaptation of the biography The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is supposed to focus on humanizing Henrietta and exposing the unethicality behind her situation, the film’s rhetorical strategies instead focus on Skloot and fabricated conflicts to create drama. In an interview by Californian Magazine author Katia Savchuk, Skloot agrees with the notion that “The emotional impact of seeing the story brought to life with real people was powerful.” Not only are films quicker at delivering the information, but the visual and auditory aspects aid in learning compared to the confined readings of a book. The author further cements this argument: “Concrete images of film are easier to remember long after their display than the imagined ones required for reading” (Drucker 4). In turn, our busy, modern society pushes films as a more efficient way to consume information. One could watch an hour film that presented the same information as a 300-page book. are better vectors to reach and inform a vast audience” (4). According to the Harvard Crimson article “Watching, Not Reading,” the author, Jacob Drucker, argues that “as visual, rather than textual, stimulus. This is because films have several methods to reach a wider audience that books lack. At first glance, this seems like a triumph for those trying to raise awareness about Henrietta Lack’s situation and humanize her. After the success of Rebecca Skloot’s New York Times Best Seller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a film adaptation was released by HBO and directed by George C. And, like most personal stories, the ending marks another beginning. Both tell of inner discoveries and outer travels as I ride my bikes-Little Silver and Sunny-across the country. Bicycling Home, My Journey to Find God, was not written as a sequel to Across America on the Yellow Brick Road -they stand alone-but it is definitely a continuation of my inner journey. My search for God became a full-blown, inner wildfire of longing after a nighttime dream of God coming to me when I was 30. O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?Įxploring the inner life is a kind of vocation for me. Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with Thee, and Thou with me,įor we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go,Īnd we will risk the ship, ourselves and all. This poem from Walt Whitman expresses my deep reality: Thomas Keating, Neil Douglas-Klotz, Thich Nhat Hanh, Byron Katie, and others, as well as wonderful people who do not make teaching their profession. Scott Peck, Robert Johnson, Paramahansa Yogananda, Ram Dass, Tessa Bielecki, Paul Tillich, Pema Chodron, Fr. My most significant teachers are… Thomas Merton, Marion Woodman, M. There are many paths to our spiritual homes, and many names for God (I’m not out to convert anyone!) and I have been, and continue to be, guided and inspired by the wisdom teachings of many spiritual traditions. While my particular spiritual journey turns out to be intimately connected with Christ and Christianity, I consider myself a spiritually independent Christian. My most memorable experiences, without a doubt, are the two bike trip adventures, which are recounted in my two books. These characteristics have led me to engage in extremely rewarding and engrossing work: in politics, as a congressional aide in business, as co-founder of a restaurant and education center in the arts as an author, painter, printer and publisher. Do I feel that I have fulfilled my life's purpose? What am I most proud of? Those are big questions but I can say I’m especially glad that I have taken risks, that I have followed my heart, and followed inspirations even if they seemed far-fetched. To get an overview of my life I sometimes like to imagine how I will feel as I am near departure from this earthly place. That’s my quick ‘n easy “biography.” But what’s more interesting to me-and perhaps you as well-is a brief look at the bigger and deeper picture of my 65 years on the planet. I am a California native, and have lived in New Mexico with my husband and family of animals for almost 30 years. |
